Fisheries keen to reel in Yorke Peninsula volunteers

Do you have a passion for fishing and your local community? Then why not become a Fishcare Volunteer.

The Fishcare Volunteers group, run through PIRSA Fisheries, plays an essential role in educating recreational fishers through face-to-face contact.

State Fishcare Volunteer Coordinator, Toni Cox, said that PIRSA Fisheries was looking to expand its Fishcare team on the Yorke Peninsula to help spread the word about sustainable fishing.

“We are holding an information night at the Ardrossan Scouts Hall on Wednesday 27 October for people keen to find out more becoming a Fishcare Volunteer,” she said.

“Fishcare Volunteers help keep anglers up-to-date with the rules and regulations that apply to recreational fishing and they have a vital role in raising community awareness of the need to protect our fish stocks.

“Volunteers patrol local jetties, boat ramps and other fishing hot spots providing recreational fishers with important advice and assistance to ensure they don’t over-fish and so there are enough fish for the future.

“Our volunteers are the education arm of PIRSA Fisheries. They help distribute our education material as well as hand out other handy stickers and measuring devices; all aimed at helping recreational fishers get the most out of their fishing experience, while doing so within the law.

“We currently have a small team of passionate volunteers in the Yorke Peninsula region, so an exciting opportunity exists for fishing enthusiasts to be part of the growing team in the area.

“So if you have some spare time, have a passion for fishing and the outdoors, or you just  want to give a little something back to the community, I’d encourage you come to the information night to find out more.”
