River Murray irrigator grant workshops

Monday, 24 August 2009

Irrigators along the River Murray corridor with off-farm income are encouraged to apply for the State Government’s grant program to help keep their permanent plantings alive this summer.

The Irrigated Industry Support Program (IISP) will provide grants of up to $260 per megalitre for water allocations purchased between 1 July 2009 and 28 February 2010.

The program is available to viable farm businesses that choose to purchase water allocation for critical survival needs to irrigate permanent plantings and are authorised to take and use River Murray water.

Helen Lamont, PIRSA Director Sustainable Systems said that the criteria for accessing the program was based solely on proving ‘long-term viability’ and having an off-farm income did not automatically render irrigators ineligible.

“Seeking work off-farm is sometimes a personal decision and not necessarily related to the long term viability of a business,” she said.

“The important thing to remember is that we are assessing the long-term future of the business, and that is what irrigators will need to prove. This is separate from any off-farm income they have.”

Ms Lamont said before making any hasty decisions about whether or not to apply for the program or purchase water, irrigators should at least seek expert advice.

“Next week we will begin holding a series of workshop sessions to assist irrigators understand more about the program and how they can make the best business decisions prior to making any water purchases.

“I encourage all irrigators who are still unsure about whether to seek assistance to come along.

“We have received strong interest in the program, and these workshops will give irrigators the information they need to know before making any big decisions on their water purchases.”

Ms Lamont said irrigators who applied for support through the Critical Water Allocation program last year will also receive an information package shortly, inviting them to apply for the IISP and attend an upcoming workshop session.
