GM Crops Management Act Review meetings

Monday 9 July, 2007

A series of community meetings will be held across the State to explain a review into the Genetically Modified Crops Management Act 2004.

The meetings will be held at 7.30 pm at the following locations:

Adelaide:  Thursday 12 July, Plant Research Centre Auditorium, Entrance 2B, Hartley Gove, Urrbrae.

Cummins: Monday 16 July, Cummins Bowling Club

Kadina: Tuesday 17 July, Farm Shed Museum and Tourism Centre, 50 Moonta Road, Kadina

Keith: Wednesday 18 July, Keith Bowling Club

Parndana: Thursday 19 July, Parndana Town Hall.

The Act, which gives effect to the South Australian government’s commitment to ensure that the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops is regulated in SA, requires that it be reviewed by the fourth anniversary of its commencement (i.e. by 29 April 2008).

GM food crops can not be cultivated anywhere in South Australia. These regulations expire on 29 April 2008.

The community meetings will explain why the review is being conducted and to help people understand the issues that the review will address.

The review will focus on:

  • The purpose of the Act and whether there are alternative ways to prevent adverse market outcomes
  • The operation of the Act
  • The regulation that prohibits the cultivation of GM crops in SA.

Individuals and organisations can also comment on an Information Paper available from www.pir.sa.gov.au/gmc or on request by telephoning (08) 8226 0400, faxing (08) 8463 3366 or email: gmcropsactreview@saugov.sa.gov.au

Submissions must be lodged by 3 August 2007. All submissions will be treated as public documents and will be available to others on request.
