Fourth World Congress of Rural Women

The report highlights South Australia’s delegation to the Fourth World Congress of Rural Women in South Africa in April this year and the ways forward for addressing rural issues worldwide.

The delegation was led by MP Lyn Breuer and 13 rural women from South Australia including bursary winners, Denise Johns from Port Pirie, Judy Schroeder from Pinnaroo and Sarah Jared from Naracoorte.

Key recommendations from the South Australian delegation include:

  • Improving rural poverty and health;
  • Increasing the capacity of rural women in South Australia to support their industry and community through mentoring;
  • Ensuring legislative frameworks have a commitment to equality for women;
  • Developing micro enterprises in rural communities;
  • Local government having a role in rural women’s development; and
  • Valuing traditional ways (indigenous and multicultural).
