Consultation on draft South Australian Biosecurity Strategy 2008 – 2013

You are invited to contribute your ideas and views to assist in the development of a biosecurity strategy for South Australia.

The strategy aims to ensure that biological threats (exotic pests and diseases) in South Australia are addressed effectively through collaboration and participation by governments, industries and communities.

The draft strategy covers threats within the following biosecurity sectors: animal health, aquatic animal health, aquatic pests, plant health, public health, social amenity pests and diseases, terrestrial vertebrate pests, weeds, wildlife health, and other terrestrial environmental pests and diseases.

The draft South Australian Biosecurity Strategy 2008–2013 and a summary brochure can be downloaded here or you can telephone (08) 8226 7980 to request copies.

Your ideas and views are welcomed and will be used to inform the development of the strategy. It aims to provide an effective policy and planning framework to manage the threats posed by exotic pest and diseases to industries, natural environments and communities.

Written submissions should be addressed to Biosecurity Strategy Consultation and sent via:

Some suggested areas of the draft strategy on which you may wish to comment:

The strategy outlines the issues critical to the success of biosecurity arrangements in South Australia. The following questions are intended to assist you in commenting on the biosecurity strategy. However, all comments are welcome.

  1. The strategy sets out four goals that cover the biosecurity continuum, from pre-border prevention to post border management.   Are the biosecurity goals and objectives identified relevant to you and/or your industry/sector?
  2. The strategy will be achieved through the objectives and actions underlying the strategy’s four goals. What are your views on the tables of actions, outcomes, responsibilities and milestones in appendix 2?
  3. The strategy is based on 8 key principles. Do you support these principles?
  4. The strategy aims to ensure a comprehensive, coordinated and collaborative approach across all biosecurity sectors. How well do you believe the strategy would achieve this aim?
  5. The strategy provides a framework to manage threats posed by pests and diseases to primary industries, natural environments and communities. Are there any gaps in the proposed biosecurity arrangements?
  6. Are there other significant issues impacting on South Australia’s biosecurity that you believe could be addressed through the SA Biosecurity Strategy?
  7. Do you have a particular interest or involvement in one (or more) of the biosecurity sectors described here?  If so, how important will the strategy be to your sector?
