Approval Process Summary

One of the key features of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 is that no regulated activity can be undertaken within a licence without an approved Statement of Environmental Objectives (SEO) for the area or land system in which the activity is to be carried out.

The SEO must be prepared on the basis of information provided in an Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

The Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act defines the assessment and approval process (.PDF) for an EIR and SEO.  Once approved, the SEO becomes a publicly available document.

With an approved SEO in place, activity notification and approval requirements must be satisfied before regulated activities can commence on the ground.
