PACE

The State Government's PACE 2020 initiative is creating new opportunities for exploration and mining in South Australia - unlocking new areas for exploration, streamlining the process from exploration to mine development and providing world leading data delivery services to the resources industry.

The Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) was initiated in April 2004 to promote South Australia as a premier destination for mineral and energy investment.

PACE 2004–2009: Highlights and achievements

PACE report

  • The Treasury and the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies conservatively estimate net economic benefit to SA in excess of $300m for an investment of $23m (November 2009)
  • 335 proposals for drilling collaboration submitted over 5 rounds with 168 projects sharing in $10m of PACE funding
  • Drilling success leading to discovery of the Carrapateena Cu-Au deposit - one of the best intersections anywhere in the world, extending the prospectivity corridor for IOCG mineral systems
  • Substantial number of other PACE drilling successes - discoveries of uranium, copper-gold, gold, mineral sands, and iron ore deposits and water
  • Record levels of exploration expenditure and drilling approvals: 1,314,219 m approved in 2008 (compared to 364,010 m in 2005)
  • Release of new geoscience mapping and geophsyical data, including the largest gravity survey in Australia, leading to record take up of exploration licences
  • Upgrade and development of on-line data and service through SARIG (the South Australian Resources Information Geoserver)
  • Establishment of a new Chair and SA Centre for Mineral Exploration under Cover and a new Chair of Mining Geology
  • Positive engagement with indigenous communities: new licences granted and exploration programs completed; funding of two tenement/ liaison officers in the APY; training of local workforce for site rehabilitation
  • Global awareness of South Australian mineral prospectivity and the innovative and outstanding PACE success
  • Fraser Institute top rankings; ResourceStocks top rankings: PACE nominated 'Digger of the Year' at Diggers & Dealers; SA Premier's Award for 'Growing Prosperity'
  • PACE model copied by Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia

PACE 2004–2009 Themes

More information about the themes and achievements is available in the PACE report 2004–2009.

NOTE: Successful proposals for Round 6 cooperative exploration drilling projects jointly funded by industry and the government's PACE initiative have now been announced

PACE 2020

PIRSA is proposing the development of a new look PACE in 2010 with the focus on:

  • Innovative geoscience - methods, maps and models
  • Diversification of industry partnerships and collaborative research
  • Education and training support
  • Communication and promotion of the South Australian resources sector

PACE 2020 includes key areas of the initial PACE themes, including:

  • Strong indigenous engagement and cultural awareness
  • Collection of geophysical and geochemical data
  • Access to geoscientific data - eliminating the obstacles of distance and time
