About the Library
The PIRSA Geoscience Library (formerly the South Australian Department of Mines and Energy Library) was established in 1948, from an informal collection of the Geological Survey of South Australia.
It holds the world’s largest collection of material dealing with South Australian geology, and at present holds over 16,000 books, 370 serial titles, audiovisual, CDROM and rare book material on geoscience, mining and earth related topics. The Library has a particularly strong national and international collection of Geological Survey holdings, from all states around Australia, and from overseas countries including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.
The Library also holds a large collection of geoscience Departmental publications, and has access to unpublished company & Departmental reports, dealing with mining and exploration activities in South Australia. Company and Departmental unpublished reports are available for loan on microfiche on inter-library loan, or can be viewed, copied and ordered from the Customer Services Centre.
Members of the public may use the Library via arrangement, and can browse and photocopy items if desired. Literature searches are available on the PIRSA Geoscience Library Catalogue and SAMREF databases. Reference Services
Literature searches can be conducted on a variety of databases, including the PIRSA Geoscience Library Catalogue which contains references to published books & journals held in the library, the SAMREF database which contains over 30,000 references to unpublished company and Departmental reports, and where required, other geoscience databases and library catalogues eg. Libraries Australia (National Library of Australia) catalogue.
Inter-Library loans and Document Delivery Services
An inter-library loan/document delivery service is provided to staff for any material not held in the Library. For external users, an inter-library loan/document delivery service is provided for material held in the collection, including unpublished company and Departmental reports on microfiche. Requests are accepted via email, fax and phone or via the Libraries Australia Document Delivery system. Standard delivery time is up to 1 week. Urgent requests preferred by fax or phone.
