Title: Parks and Reserves - Restricted Mineral Exploration Access

Originator:

Custodian: Department for Environment and Heritage

Jurisdiction: South Australia

Description

Abstract:

These are the DCDB Parcels dedicated to conservation within South Australia. These areas protect both the fauna and flora species and are a major 'biological reservoir' for the maintenance of species diversity. This data set provides an accurate location for the legal boundary of reserves dedicated under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 in South Australia. Properties included in this dataset are those where access is permitted for mineral exploration.

Data Quality

Lineage:

Source Data History: In 2001 a new procedure was implemented where all of the Government Gazette notices creating, adding to or abolishing land from parks were scanned and entered into a database. These textual data containing land parcels proclaimed as a new park, or an addition to a park, are then combined with the corresponding spaial object from the DCDB to generate a spatial table of all land parcels that constitute a park or reserve within the DEH reserves system.

Processing Steps: This dataset has been queried to show only parks and reserves where mineral exploration access is permitted.

Positional Accuracy:

Data was captured using Cadastral (DCDB) data for appropriate area. Positional accuracy varies to cadastral base - 1:100,000 is quoted.

Attribute Accuracy:

Attribute information is obtained from the Protected Areas Information System (PAIS) and is assumed to be correct at the time this data set was last refreshed. Mining and petroleum access information is summarised from the Government Gazette but does not provide a legal definition of the access for mining exploration and production. This information is only reliably available from the actual Gazette.

Logical Consistency:

ESRI ARC/INFO GIS software was used to do topological consistency checks to detect flaws in the spatial data structure, this check ensured that all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and that there is only one label in each polygon.

Completeness:

Data set is complete. The most recent park addition was gazetted on 24th July 2008.
