Statement on export of uranium to India

Premier Jay Weatherill says he supports Prime Minister Julia Gillard's proposition to allow the export of uranium to India.
"There are significant international issues associated with the proposition, which are principally matters for the Commonwealth Government," Mr Weatherill said.
"I am prepared to accept the Prime Minister's views on these matters.
"South Australia is a substantial uranium exporter and is likely to become an even bigger exporter.
"The State is also keen to build on the strong relationship it has with India.
Therefore it is clearly in SA's interests to support the proposition.
"Obviously any export of uranium to India could only occur within an appropriate international framework to be negotiated by the Commonwealth Government.
"This is the position that I will be taking to the national ALP Conference in December, which will determine the national Labor Party policy about this matter."
