Following completion of definitive feasibility studies undertaken during 2007, Hillgrove Resources announced the redevelopment of the Kanmantoo copper mine. The former open pit mine, located 55 km SE of Adelaide, operated from 1971 to 1976 and produced a total of 4.1 Mt of copper ore. The feasibility study was based on a Probable Ore Reserve of 11.1 Mt at 0.93% Cu, 0.2 g/t Au and 3.33 g/t Ag, and 0.9 Mt of Inferred Resource within a Mineral Resource of 31.8 Mt at 0.9% Cu, 0.2 g/t Au and 3.1 g/t Ag. The mine will comprise two pits and have a six and a half year mine life that may increase if underground operations prove viable. It will produce 2 Mtpa of ore resulting in 56 000 – 76 000 tpa of copper concentrates from a conventional Cu–Au flotation plant to be exported to smelters, primarily in Asia. Concentrates will contain ~15 000 – 19 000 tpa copper, 7000–9000 oz pa gold and 11 000 – 140 000 oz pa silver. Hillgrove has a life of mine off-take agreement with Sempra Metals and Concentrates. Open pit dimensions are estimated at 1.2 km by 600 m wide by 270 m deep at the completion of the first phase. The mine has potential to increase production up to 2.5 Mtpa. Currently, mineralisation extends over 2.5 km along strike and to a depth of 800 m indicating good potential for expansion. The project also has a significant resource of garnet within the host andalusite schist. The mineralisation is 1 km wide and 5 km long with garnet content varying from 10–60%.
