In late 2004 Iluka Resources announced the discovery of two zircon-rich mineral sands deposits, Jacinth and Ambrosia, in the Eucla Basin, approximately 200 km NW of Ceduna and 45 km south of the Transcontinental Railway. Since then Iluka has made four more significant discoveries in the region: Tripitaka, Gullivers, Typhoon and Dromedary.

In February 2008 Iluka announced a major upgrade in probable ore reserves for Jacinth and Ambrosia.

Ambrosia comprises 30.3 Mt at 4.8% HM (1.5 Mt of heavy minerals) and 15% clay. The heavy mineral assemblage is 22% ilmenite, 55% zircon and 5% rutile.

Jacinth comprises 68.1 Mt at 7.3% HM (5.0 Mt of heavy minerals) and 10% clay. The heavy mineral assemblage is 30% ilmenite, 49% zircon and 5% rutile.

The total ore reserve is 98.4 Mt at 6.5% HM (6.4 Mt of heavy minerals) and 12 % clay, with a heavy mineral assemblage of 28% ilmenite, 50% zircon and 5% rutile.

The ore reserve is contained within a total resource of 239.1 Mt at 4% HM (9.5 Mt of heavy minerals) and 12% clay. The heavy mineral assemblage is 28% ilmenite, 48% zircon and 5% rutile.

Ore will be mined progressively using dry-mining techniques. Ore will be excavated via a dozer and pushing into a Mining Upgrade Plant (MUP). The ore will then be pumped to the Wet Concentrator Plant (WCP), producing heavy mineral concentrate. Approximately 7 Mt of heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) will be produced over the indicative 10–15 year life of the project, with an estimated capital cost of $400m.

Iluka and the Far West Coast Native Title Claim Group signed an agreement in December 2007 to allow mining to proceed.
