Exploration - FAQs

How much does it cost to apply for an exploration licence in South Australia?

Refer to the Mining Act fees page on the website.

What is required to take out an exploration licence?

    • An application form must be filled out and lodged with the Mineral Tenements Branch, Level 5, 101 Grenfell Street, Adelaide (GPO Box 1264, Adelaide 5001).

    • The ground being applied for must not be over existing licences or licence applications, subject to the provision that if there is an existing mineral exploration licence over an area and you wish to make application for an opal exploration licence, you may do so by obtaining the written permission from the mineral exploration licensee or vice versa.

    • A plan defining the area sought must be provided.

      • Details of the proposed exploration program and expenditure must be provided.

      • Evidence of financial and technical resources must be provided.

Refer to Information Sheet M05: Mineral exploration licences - general conditions, procedures and information for more information

Is there a minimum expenditure requirement?

The minimum expenditure requirement for the first year of tenure is nominally $30,000 plus $97 per square kilometre per year, and rounded to the nearest $5000.

How can I get access to reports?

If an Exploration Licence has been surrendered or has expired an open file report should be available. Reports are available from our Customer Services Branch resources.customerservices@sa.gov.au

Note that reports from current licences are confidential and will not be released to open file until that licence has been surrendered or has expired.
