The following is a transcript of the article that appears in PIRSA's publication, Primetime, Summer 2010, page 10 Mineral resource, regulatory and infrastructure experts have been gazing 20 years into the future, forecasting South Australia's electricity demand in 2030. Gathering for a recent workshop, they predicted future power requirements, comparing them to both existing and planned electricity supply infrastructure. The workshop was initiated by the PIRSA-funded Resources and Energy Infrastructure Council (RESIC) in collaboration with ElectraNet and the SA Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME). Participants examined five scenarios for the future of SA energy supply and demand, focusing on meeting the requirements of the mineral resources industry and taking climate change policy into consideration. The recommendations,w hich will be integrated into the SA Strategic Infrastructure Plan, include boosting peak power capacity, building a new interconnector to NSW, upgrading exisiting interconnectors and putting in a new transmission line and connection points. RESIC Director Joe Mastrangelo said the workshop was part of vital long-term planning for the state's economic development. "It's important that we look at what we have now and where we want to be in 20 years, then identify the critical infrastructure needed to meet that future demand," Joe said. "This is about creating an environment that is conducive to encouraging continued investment not only in mining but across the board." |
