Our Organisation

DMITRE's Resources and Energy Group (REG) regulates South Australian mineral, petroleum and geothermal resources.

The group is headed by the Deputy Chief Executive, Resources and Energy, who reports through the Chief Executive of DMITRE to the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy.

There are four business divisions within the group:

  • Mineral resources
  • Energy resources
  • Energy markets and programs
  • Office of the Olympic Dam taskforce

The Mineral Resources division administers all legislation relating to exploration, mining and opal mining.

The Petroleum and Geothermal division administers legislation relating to oil, gas and geothermal activities.

Mineral Resources Division

The Mineral Resources Division consists of four branches:

Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA)

The Geological Survey of South Australia collects, manages and interprets scientific information and provides geoscientific advice and data to government, industry and the community.

Activities include regional mapping, commissioning airborne geophysical surveys, ground geophysics, remote sensing, seismology and biostratigraphy, and mineral potential assessments.

The information is collected from its own fieldwork and from data and core samples provided by companies exploring in South Australia. Data obtained by the branch is analysed by its own geological professionals and used to provide:

  • geological maps, records, datasets and reports
  • geophysical data files, maps, profiles and reports
  • spatial and GIS digital data files
  • drill core, rock and mineral samples and specimens
  • mine production records and statistics
  • open file reports (i.e. data supplied primarily by exploration companies)
  • photographic collections, historical records and a wide range of educational and teaching materials.
