3D modelling can be a powerful tool to understanding geology.
The process allows geoscientists to test the validity of geological assumptions or hypotheses about a project area and provides a mechanism to validate existing data.
3D models also highlight gaps in knowledge and data within a project area.
The Exploration Geology Group within the Geological Survey Branch has an active program of progressing mineral potential studies of key areas of the state, including through 3D modelling techniques.
Various software packages such as Intrepid Geophysics' 3D Geomodeller (opens in new window) and Earth Decision's Gocad (opens in new window) are used to create the models.
Models will be exported to multiple formats to ensure explorers without sophisticated 3D viewing and modelling applications have access to fully interactive 3D models. These formats include Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) and 3D-pdf. The Geological Survey Branch recommends use of the 3D-pdf format because of its portability and interactivity features. The user can:
Selected models may also include vertical exaggeration capabilities.
