The Exploration Geology Group within the Geological Survey of South Australia has an active program of progressing mineral potential studies of key areas of the state, including through 3D modelling techniques.

About 3D modelling

3D modelling can be a powerful tool to understanding geology.

The process allows geoscientists to test the validity of geological assumptions or hypotheses about a project area and provides a mechanism to validate existing data.

3D models also highlight gaps in knowledge and data within a project area.

Various software packages such as Intrepid Geophysics' 3D Geomodeller (opens in new window) and Paradigm's Gocad (opens in new window) are used to create the models.

Using 3D models

The Geological Survey of South Australia recommends use of the 3D-pdf format because of its portability and interactivity features. The user can:

  • fully interact with the model using the 3D toolbar
  • selectively activate and/or deactivate any geological unit or fault
  • identify units with a mouse-click.

Selected models may also include vertical exaggeration capabilities.

Note that the models are presented as 'proof of concept' only and their accuracy (spatial or otherwise) should not be relied upon for exploration or other decision making processes.
