Earthquake Monitoring Network Expansion

A new network is being established with funding from the Commonwealth Government (under the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program), SA Water, Primary Industries and Resources SA, and Security and Emergency Management Office.

A network of seven sites (two existing and five new) will record vibrations and send data in close to real-time to a central office where earthquakes will be quickly located. Within the metropolitan area, three instruments (probably moved annually) will be used to estimate amplification properties.

The expected completion date for new network is November 2006.

The diagram below shows the locations of the proposed new stations (yellow circles). The locations are as follows:

  • Adelaide (ADE)
  • Freeling Area
  • Myponga (MYP)
  • Palmer (PLMR)
  • Sedan (SDAN)
  • Strathalbyn
  • Yorke Peninsula
