Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) supports the community and industry with a range of databases and services designed to promote understanding of the State's geology, mineral and energy resources.
To achieve this, PIRSA manages a number of geological and geophysical databases that are updated as new information becomes available. These are supported by archival databases.
The information available includes open file company data and data collected by PIRSA and Geoscience Australia (GA - formerly AGSO, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation).
These databases have been developed in UNIX and Windows environments using geographic (GIS), relational (RDBMS), and text retrieval systems.
The Customer Services Centre can help with technical enquiries including database searches.
Mineral Resources Group provides a wide range of high-quality geophysical data and advice to the exploration industry and the public. These services are in line with PIRSA's objective to promote mineral exploration and development by facilitating access to geoscientific data and improving quality and integration of databases.
To promote mineral exploration, the South Australian Government has undertaken major airborne geophysical surveys in key areas of the State as part of the South Australian Exploration Initiative (SAEI), Broken Hill Exploration Initiative (BHEI) and the Targeted Exploration Initiative low cost, and charges for all products generally cover PIRSA handling costs only.
The following information is a summary of the databases used and maintained by the Mineral Resources Group. Many of these databases are available online through SARIG, either under the headings of Information or Geodata or as layers in the Map Window interface.
Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) geophysicists are constantly updating the South Australia TMI grid by adding open file company survey data, as it becomes available to the already existing Exploration Initiatives Data, Geoscience Australia (GA) Data and historic open file company survey data.
This database contains reference information on all airborne surveys over South Australia and adjacent waters from data tapes held by Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA).
Modules developed and maintained include image, survey boundary, flight paths and data systems. Plots of contours, stacked profiles, flight lines and full colour images of total magnetic intensity are prepared on demand.
Magnetic and radiometric data sets from each South Australian Exploration Initiative (SAEI) survey area are available as colour images at 1:250 000 scale, black and white contour maps at 1:250 000 and 1:100 000.
The South Australian gravity database contains approximately 260,000 gravity stations and is a critical companion to the South Australian Exploration Initiative (SAEI) airborne magnetic and radiometric data.
Plots of maps, contours, images and grids are prepared on demand, for any area of interest.
The Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) Gravity Database is the product of the amalgamation of historical data, Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR, now known as AGSO) regional data, detailed company surveys and PIRSA-sponsored regional surveys.
There are currently approximately 260 000 stations in the database, the most comprehensive in Australia and the largest source of gravity data available for South Australia.
A dynamic and customisable range of products are available to meet the variable demands of an ever diversifying industry. A choice of observed gravity values in Mgals or µms-2, and Bouguer Gravity can be produced in a variety of forms;
A library of digital geological maps that provides accurate, detailed and up-to-date coverage of the State's geology is contained in SA GEOLOGY.
A State geological map is available in digital format or colour plot at 1:1 million scale. Detailed geological maps are available for much of South Australia as digital data files or as standard map plots. Generally, the standard map unit is 1:100 000, but in several remote areas it is 1:250 000 and in some geologically detailed areas it is 1:50 000
The digital data is available in ArcVIEW, MapInfo formats.
SA_DISPLAY is an integrated set of statewide geological, geophysical and geochemical databases brought together in a geographical information system (GIS) where they can be digitally overlain and interrogated.
Themes include coastline, cultural features, map sheets, geology, tectonic and basin maps, magnetic and gravity maps, aeromagnetic flight lines, seismic lines, drillholes, mineral occurrences, rock samples/geochemistry and exploration licences.
The data sets are available in ArcVIEW and MapInfo formats.
Information on known mineral occurrences in South Australia is contained in the Mineral Deposit Database. Locality, commodity, geological setting and style of mineralisation are some of the attributes.
Hardcopy is available in Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) report format.
