SA Sheep Advisory Group

The South Australian Sheep Advisory Group was formed in 1998 and is comprised of nine members representing various sectors of the sheep industry in South Australia.  Five members represent the commercial sheep producers, one member represents the stud merino breeders, one member represents the stud sheepmeat breeders, one member represents the South Australian Farmers' Federation , and one member is appointed by the Minister for Primary Industries and Resources SA.

The SASAG also has the ability to appoint an independent Chairman from outside the membership of the Group making a total membership of 10 members appointed by the Minister.

On July 1, 2002, an independent Chairman was to be appointed for a period of two years.  In addition to the extensive industry knowledge each member brings to the Group, it also receives extensive information and expert veterinary advice from the SA OJD Committee, PIRSA, SARDI and Animal Health Australia.

The Sheep Advisory Group's principal role is to provide to the Minister for Primary Industries and Resources SA on all matters affecting sheep producers in South Australia.  In addition to this role, the SASAG administers the Sheep Industry Fund and determines how those funds are spent for the benefit of the SA sheep industry.

Some of the issues discussed by the Sheep Advisory Group include:

  • Animal Health and Welfare
  • Sheep Identification and Property Registration
  • Sheep Vendor Declarations
  • Trade and Zone restrictions
  • Codes of Practice
  • Animal and Plant Control

The Sheep Advisory Group currently funds three industry programs through the Sheep Industry Fund.  These are the SheepLice Program, the Dog Fence Program, and the SA OJD Program.  Each year the Sheep Advisory Group reviews the programs that funding is provided to, as well as applications for funding for new sheep industry programs.  If you would like more information about the programs being funded, or information on how to make an application for funding, please contact:
