Cattle movements between properties with different property identification codes (PICs) must be reported to the NLIS database. This is called a Property to Property transfer (P2P).
Property to Property movements include:
• moving cattle between your own properties, if those properties have different PICs
• buying cattle privately
• moving cattle to and from leased property
• moving cattle to and from agistment properties
P2P transfers must be completed on the database within 7 days of the movement.
Producers with more than one property may consider amalgamating those properties under a single PIC if they are managed as a single entity (if located within 80km). This will eliminate the need to transfer cattle on the database when moving cattle between the properties.
While amalgamating properties may eliminate the need to notify the NLIS database of property to property movements, it may result in quarantine for all properties in the event of a disease or residue incident. Consult your local PIRSA office for more information.
To transfer cattle on the database you need to have:
• NLIS number (visual number on tag) or Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) number (electronic number that can be scanned) of each animal being transferred
• PIC of the property that the animals are moving FROM
• PIC of the property that the animals are moving TO
• National Vendor Declaration (NVD) serial number (if applicable)
• Transfer date.
The NLIS database will notify both parties, by email only, when a property-to-property transfer has been recorded.
Remember…. P2P transfers must be done within 7 days of the movement.
The tag shows the NLIS number printed on the front of the device. This complete number can be used to transfer this animal on the database.
Several options are available for reporting transfers, depending on the facilities and equipment available to each producer.
1. Sending the information electronically using your NLIS database account
2. Authorising a third party to conduct an electronic transfer ie your agent
3. Completing a ‘Form A’ livestock movement form and submitting by fax or mail (for less than 20 animals)
1. Transferring animals using an NLIS database account.
To transfer cattle on the NLIS database you must first set up your NLIS Database Account. Setting up your account is easy – to do so visit www.nlis.com.au
To learn how to use the database to transfer cattle read the Reference Card for Producers.
To learn how to use your NLIS database account, register for a Producer Workshop in your local area.
There are many different brands of readers, scanners and software available to help make transferring cattle easier. Contact the manufacturer to check the compatibility and capabilities of the equipment before purchase. Alternatively look at the NLIS website.
2. Authorising a third party to transfer cattle.
A third party, such as your agent, can transfer cattle on the database on your behalf. However, do not assume your agent will automatically do the transfers for you. Speak with them and make a formal arrangement.
Third-party access forms can be accessed from the NLIS website or database service (1800 654 743). The third party will require an NLIS user account and will have access to the PICs specified in the application for authorisation.
3. Completing a ‘Form A’ livestock movement form and submitting by fax or mail.
Forms can be obtained by contacting the NLIS database service on 1800 654 743 or at www.nlis.com.au
Completed forms can be faxed (02 9463 9136) or mailed (NLIS helpdesk, MLA Locked Bag 991, North Sydney 2059) to the database. Paper-based recording is limited to 20 animals per transfer and may be subject to a user fee.
