The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia's system for identifying and tracking beef and dairy cattle. The NLIS uses individual electronic devices that enable cattle to be permanently identified throughout their lifetime. NLIS involves centralized recording of animal movements through a national database. This database enables fast tracking and traceability of animals from property of birth to point of slaughter.
The South Australian Government and cattle industry organisations have worked successfully together to fully implement the NLIS so that consumers in Australia and overseas can have full confidence in our beef and dairy products.
The NLIS enables cattle to be reliably identified individually and tracked from their property of birth to slaughter, protecting the reputation of South Australia's cattle industry as a supplier of ‘clean’ wholesome beef and dairy products and providing a competitive advantage in both domestic and export markets.
