All properties that run livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs etc) should be registered with Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA). This form replaces the 'Application for Allotment of Property Identification Code' form.
Registration of livestock will help to maintain our overseas markets and also assist in improving production efficiency by permitting better national disease control programs.
Registration means animals are identified individually or at least to their herd or flock and hence traceable, through the market chain, back to their property of origin. This is essential for control of the major infectious diseases, particularly exotic disease outbreaks such as Foot-and-Mouth disease. It is also imperative in resolving residue incidents.
Europe has already introduced birth to death traceability of livestock and is demanding trading partners adopt similar schemes.
Property Identification Code (PIC) numbers are allocated to all properties running cattle, sheep, pigs, deer, goats, alpacas and buffalo. The PIC number is used on Livestock Identification devices as the primary method of identification. However, for Pigs and Apiaries, the primary method of identification is a Brand consisting of three letters.
Currently all cattle, including calves, must be identified with an approved device bearing the registered PIC before they leave the property for sale or slaughter. This enables the source of any disease or chemical residue to be traced back to the property of origin.
You may also wish to use the PIC on the National Vendor Declaration forms. These are available for Cattle, Sheep & Lambs, Bobby Calves and Goats.
To apply please complete the Livestock Registration Application form and return it to either your nearest PIRSA office or post it to the address on the front of the form. A Property Identification Code and/or Brand Certificate will be issued and information on where and how to purchase your identification devices will be sent to you.
Producers can register multiple species with the one application provided the property identified applies to all the species and the registered owners are the same for all species.
If the registered owners are the same and the blocks of land are in the same Local Government Area or Hundred, one PIC will be allocated.
If two or more properties are owned, one application for each property may be required if the stock are run under different management systems or the properties are located in different areas.
For pig brands one brand will be issued per property and for apiaries one brand per registered owner(s) will be issued.
With the introduction of the new Primary Industries Information Management System industry groups have agreed registrations will be for a two-year period, excluding apiaries which remains an annual registration.
You will be notified when re-registration is due. However, should you not re-register your registration will be cancelled with no further notification.
If the registered property described on the application form changes (i.e. if you sell part or all of the property or purchase more land) you will need to advise us. You may amend the details, or cancel your registration, at any time by completing another application. Application forms are available from 33 Flemington Street, Glenside or your local PIRSA office.
Fees are required for Livestock Registrations. Some fees are paid directly from funds collected on behalf of the respective industry. Others are payable by producers.
