NLIS Sheep & Goats

Sheep

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and tracing of sheep, lambs and farmed goats.

The flock based system uses visually readable ear tags printed with your Property Identification Code (PIC) and the NLIS logo, which stay with the animal for life.

When these tags are used in conjunction with approved movement documentation (such as a waybill, or NVD), NLIS Sheep and Goats allow animals to be traced back to the property of birth and/or last property of residence.

The NLIS (Sheep and Goats) is needed to enhance Australia's ability to quickly and successfully contain a major food safety or disease incident, and to help maintain access to key export markets.

NLIS will help underpin the integrity of Australia’s sheep and goat products by:

  • Increasingly enabling rapid animal identification and traceability in case of a food safety issue or an exotic disease outbreak.
  • Ensuring domestic and export consumers have confidence in Australian sheep meat products.
  • Upholding Australia’s reputation as a producer of safe, quality sheep meat products.

NLIS Sheep and Goats was introduced in 1 January 2006.
