NLIS is an Australian cattle industry initiative, designed to provide a competitive advantage for Australian beef in export and domestic markets by improving cattle identification and traceability.
The NLIS now includes sheep, lambs and goats as well as cattle (both beef and dairy).
The NLIS enables livestock to be tracked for food safety, disease control and market access purposes from their property of birth to their slaughter. This enables the rapid tracing of livestock in the event of any disease outbreak or residue incident. This will mean the impact of these incidents on the particular livestock industry will be minimised.
PIRSA and the livestock industry continue to work together to implement the NLIS and ensure the system meets both commercial and regulatory expectations. This will help protect South Australia’s reputation as a supplier of clean and green animal products.
Further information on NLIS can be found on the Meat and Livestock Australia website.
