The PIRSA horticulture team facilitates horticulture industry development.  The program is driven by the State Strategic Plan and the State Food Plan, individual industry plans and an understanding of the various limiters that affect investment and development.  Key areas of industry development are:

• resource access and infrastructure
• biosecurity issues
• strong industry associations and communication within government 
• improving the viability of industry data and statistics
• export development 

The South Australian Food Centre at FoodSA is the principal service delivery arm for the State Food Plan. It is an innovative partnership between food industry organisations and government agencies to provide a one-stop shop for food companies who want to grow their businesses.

The Food ScoreCard is an important tool that evaluates the contribution made by the food and beverage industry to South Australia's economy from production to consumption. It also identifies opportunities for future growth.

The Industry Development Board - Horticulture advises the Minister for Primary Industries on the long-term strategic direction for the horticultural industries in South Australia and plays an important role in determining PIRSA's horticulture program.

PIRSA's Plant Health Program reduces the risk of emergency plant pest incursions in South Australia, delivered through a combination of industry co-regulation and co-operation, early detection and emergency response, quarantine and enforcement and the provision of technical advice.

The Rural Chemicals Program of PIRSA promotes the safe and responsible use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals. It is responsible for developing policies and projects that identify and manage risks to trade, food safety, environmental protection and community health arising from the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals.
