Market Opportunities for Organic Horticulture - 2003-2004

Background

Considerable interest was generated by the report written on Organic opportunities for The Premier’s Food Council.  The outcomes of that project included a strategic list of organic / near organic product opportunities and their impediments, from a range of industries including horticulture.  This project examines those opportunities specific to export horticulture in more detail, including possible models for supply chain development. It will also examine lessons learned from other governments in developing their organic sector.

Objectives

  • Review and analysis of opportunities identified, with a shortlist for further investigation and development.
  • Market research specific to those opportunities – consumer demand back through to supply and production.
  • Lessons learned from other governments developing their organic industry sector.
  • Examination of production to market issues/impediments with recommendations.
  • Connections established with relevant organic industry and commercial companies for potential product development & value adding opportunities.

Key Achievements

  • A cost benefit profile of key organic horticultural market opportunities and production impediments.
  • Recommendations and strategies for further development of specific opportunities
  • This project will continue into 2004/05.
