Citrus review

New structure for SA citrus industry

South Australia Regional Advisory Committee (SARAC) will be established as the new peak organisation to represent the State’s $348 million citrus industry.

Meetings were recently held with citrus growers and industry stakeholders, to communicate the findings of the South Australian Citrus Industry Transition Working Party (SACITWP).

South Australian Agriculture Minister, Gail Gago, announced the SACITWP’s recommendations at stakeholder meetings in the Riverland on May 10.

SARAC will be a regional arm of Citrus Australia Limited, to be funded by the Citrus Growers Fund (under the Primary Industries Funding Scheme 1998) with costs to growers to be reduced by up to 75%.

SACITWP Chair, Hon Neil Andrew, will head a selection committee to establish the inaugural SARAC. The committee will consist of people nominated by the SA Citrus Industry Development Board, and the Citrus Growers of SA, as well as a Citrus Australia representative.

Minister Gago established the SACITWP at the end of 2011, following an independent review of structures in the State’s citrus industry. Read below for further information about the SACITWP and review.

South Australian Citrus Industry Transition Working Party

The  SACITWP was established by Agriculture Minister Gail Gago late last year, to transition from two State-based representative groups (Citrus Growers South Australia and the Citrus Industry Development Board), to the establishment of a new progressive united body.

Ms Gago said this move will reduce inefficiencies and duplication concerns, raised by industry stakeholders, and ultimately cut costs to growers, mapping a more economically sustainable way forward for the industry.

Former Member for Wakefield and Riverland citrus grower, Neil Andrew, was appointed to lead this process together with industry.

Citrus review

The Citrus Industry Review was conducted to review the structure and legislative arrangements that govern the South Australian citrus industry. The review was commissioned by former Agriculture Minister Michael O’Brien and carried out by retired District Court Judge, Alan Moss.

The Citrus Industry Review Report (PDF 306.1 KB ) follows an extensive public consultation process, including interviews with 62 stakeholders and 22 written submissions from industry representatives.
