Art Competition Discovers a Forest of Talent
Monday 3rd March 2008
St Martins College Student Laura Johnston has had work selected in the Riddoch Art Gallery’s permanent collection following the successful PIRSA Forestry “Find the Forest in Your House” school art competition.
The Year 7 student’s work, a two-dimensional layered collage from newspaper, features a house with superimposed text about forests and forestry. In the doorway and windows is a simplified drawing of a tree with multi-storey buildings in the background.
The competition, which was opened to schools in the Limestone Coast region, received over 60 entries from 10 schools.
As part of the competition students were asked to look for every day forest products that could be found in their home or used in its construction. Entries received featured various media including sketches, collages, and three-dimensional presentations.
Executive Director Forestry, Stuart West said he was pleased with the response and the standard of entries received for the competition.
“Not only has the competition made students aware just how much the timber products influence and impact on their everyday lives, but to unearth budding local talent is a bonus,” he said.
“As the timber industry celebrates its achievements and innovations this week with AUSTimber 08 it is equally important that our school students understand its importance.”
Winning entries will be on display at the Riddoch Art Gallery as part of the AUSTimber 2008 Heritage Photographic Exhibition, which is open until 30 March. Admission is free.
Entries will also be on display as part of the PIRSA Forestry display at the Combined Agencies Marquee at the South East Field Days at Lucindale 14 & 15 March.
Winners will be presented with their prizes at their schools during the week commencing 17 March.
