Limestone Coast fishers congratulated

Officers from PIRSA Fisheries have congratulated recreational fishers for their adherence to the law following a recent joint operation to check compliance with fisheries regulations, vessel registration, boating safety rules and alcohol testing in the southeast region of South Australia.
Checks were conducted by PIRSA Fisheries and SAPOL Officers of people fishing from boats in the Kingston, Cape Jaffa, Robe, Beachport and Southend areas during the recent Australia Day long weekend.
Only a few minor breaches were detected and Manager of PIRSA Fisheries Compliance Services, Mr Paul Tatarelli said that the overall result was a positive reflection on the general community.
“There were no infringements detected amongst the 500 boating safety and fisheries checks conducted.”
“However, 20 warnings were issued for relatively minor breaches of boating safety regulations amongst a further 140 boats that were checked for marine safety equipment and boat registration infringements.”
“This result emphasises the fact that in general, fishers and boaties have a good understanding of the rules that apply to them while fishing and boating in South Australian waters.”
“Of some concern, however, was the lack of knowledge shown by some boat owners and passengers of where the safety gear was stowed on their vessels.”
“As a result, we would encourage all sea goers to take the time to familiarise themselves with where safety gear is kept onboard their boats and ensure it is within easy and quick reach should they ever have to use it,” Mr Tatarelli said.
