GM Crop Advisory Committee

The GM Crop Advisory Committee was established under the Genetically Modified Crops Management Act 2004 (external site). The GM Crop Advisory Committee is an expert committee comprising supply chain representatives that provides advice on issues and risks posed to markets and trade by GM crops. The Advisory Committee consists of between 9 and 11 members with specific knowledge and experience.

The Committee has the following terms of reference:

  • To advise the Minister in regard to the designation of areas of the State to which there will be a regulatory requirement pursuant to section 5[1] of the Act
  • To advise the Minister if a nominated class of GM food crop should be specified for cultivation on the basis that, pursuant to section 5[5][a], [b] or [c], appropriate segregation and identity preservation systems are, or can be, implemented that would permit GM and non-GM production of that class of crop to be undertaken in coexistence
  • To advise the Minister in regard to any variation or revocation of prior designations made under section 5
  • To advise the Minister in relation to the appropriateness of issuing Exemption Notices under section 6[2][a][ii] and [iii], and to recommend to the Minister the conditions of operation that should be applied to the Exemption Notice section 5
  • To investigate any matter referred to the Committee by the Minister

The current Advisory Committee was appointed by the Governor on 26 August 2010 (see page 4334 of the South Australian Government Gazette (external site opens in new window) published 26 August 2010).
