Lesson Plan - What is a Tree?
Tasks
- Discuss the question - ‘What is a Tree?’
- Look at the different parts of a tree.
- Discuss the vital role trees play in our environment.
Key Learning Areas
- Studies of Society and the Environment.
- English and Language.
- Health and Physical Education.
Resources Needed
- Shoe box, or other box of a similar size.
- Scrap material, scissors, masking tape, leaves - dried and fresh, pine cones,twigs, bark and nuts.
- Materials are for the construction of a forestry feely box.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to answer the question – ‘What is a Tree?’
- Students will learn about the different parts of a tree.
- Students will begin to develop an understanding that there are different types of trees.
- Students will begin to learn ways in which we can care for trees.
Lesson Layout
- Introduce the lesson with the feely box.
- Ask students to come up one at a time, feel what is in the box and try to describe one of the items without saying what it is.
- See if the class can guess what the item is.
- Discuss the fact that trees, like people or cars, have many different parts.
- Students can work in groups to complete the activity sheet.
- Students sit in a circle to share and discuss their work.
