Lesson Plan - What do we Know and Feel About Forests?

Task

  • An adapted version of Edward De Bonos’s Six Thinking Hats model.

Key Learning Areas

  • Studies of Society and the Environment.
  • English and Language.
  • Health and Physical Education.

Resources needed

  • Six coloured cut-outs of the thinking hats.
    • Red: Feelings “What are my feelings about forests?”
    • Blue: Thinking “How can forests help to prevent problems from developing?”
    • Yellow: Strengths “What are all the good things about forests?”
    • Green: New ideas “What can we do to help forests?”
    • Orange: Weaknesses “What problems are naturally-grown forests facing?”
    • White: Information “What are some of the interesting facts we learnt about forests?”

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will explore and discuss their thoughts and feelings about forests.
  • Students will listen to other people’s ideas and concerns.
  • Students will contribute to making good decisions for the future.

Lesson Layout

  • Place coloured pictures of the hats on the floor in the centre of a class circle.
  • Encourage discussion and sharing of thoughts and ideas.
  • Students to record their thoughts, feelings and ideas on the accompanying student activity sheet.

Lesson Note

Teachers may like to enlarge the activity sheet when photocopying to allow extra space for student answers.
