Forests are of great value and are an integral part of people’s lives, providing the newspapers we read, timber for our houses and furniture, and many other useful products. They are ecosystems that are essential for our health and that of the planet, and also have significant recreational and cultural value.
South Australia has a long history of sustainable forest management, with the first plantation trials commencing back in 1875. Radiata pines, and more recently blue gums, have been identified as fastgrowing species that can supply many of our timber needs so that today South Australia no longer harvests timber from its native forests.
The climate, soils and topography in South Australia and Western Victoria combined with excellent forest management, harvesting and production techniques have made for a globally competitive plantation timber industry.
By using Forestry matters! I believe young people will be inspired to take a greater interest in our forests, value the important role plantations play in supporting one of our most significant industries, and conserving our native forests.
