South Australian Forest Industry Strategy

A major task for the Forest Industry Development Board is to develop a South Australian forest industry strategy to lead the innovation and development in the forest and forest products sector that supports sustainable economic growth in the State.

The final South Australian Forest Industry Strategy (pdf ) sets out a vision and targets, articulates key directions and strategies, and identifies major opportunities for industry to work with government and community to strengthen the development of a sustainable future for the forest industry in South Australia.

Implementation Priorities

During the consultation process with stakeholders, seven priorities have been identified to support the implementation of the strategy:

  • collaboration
  • community acceptance
  • value adding
  • business environment
  • investment
  • workforce
  • policy.

Several example actions have already been identified and are already under way. For example, the State Government will develop a forest industry policy, and PIRSA has commenced a value chain project to maximise returns from plantation resources.

Next Steps

For this strategy to be of benefit, it is vital for industry, government and the community to work together to develop and lead effective actions. To be successful, the critical next steps in implementation of the strategy include:

  • communicate the strategy with industry, government and community
  • continue dialogue with regional communities and industry to progress implementation of the strategy
  • pursue implementation through a whole of government and industry partnership approach
  • facilitate effective action on the ground
  • monitor progress and review the strategy by 2016.
