AIMS:
To investigate various products for first year weed control in Eucalyptus globulus plantations and establish their benefits.
CONCLUSIONS:
• All of the herbicide prescriptions tested provided an acceptable level of weed control during the critical spring – summer period following planting.
• Growth rates decreased as the rate of Gesatop® (simazine) increased which is indicative of a phytotoxic impact retarding growth.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Simazine is not recommended for use on the sandy soils of the Green Triangle Region for the establishment of Tasmanian blue gum plantations.
• Atrazine is recommended as a suitable triazine herbicide which can be used as an alternative to simazine for the establishment of Tasmanian blue gum plantations in the Green Triangle Region.
