Visiting Forests

Most public forests are available for recreation and tourism, regardless of whether they are managed primarily for conservation, environmental protection or wood production.

A wide range of recreational opportunities are available depending upon the forest type and its management regime:

  • Cycling
  • Cultural heritage appreciation
  • Driving
  • Nature study
  • Picnicking and playing
  • Riding and walking animals
  • Walking and running

Before visiting a forest for recreation, it is important to know what activities are allowed and any conditions that may apply.

In South Australia, the principal public forests are managed by ForestrySA (forest reserves) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (national and conservation parks).
