Native Forest Reserves

PIRSA Forestry supports ForestrySA's management of about 26,800 hectares of native forest in South Australia, all located in the high rainfall areas of the State. These areas are managed for the conservation of biodiversity to ensure their long term future and no harvesting of timber occurs.

Most areas are proclaimed as Native Forest Reserves under State legislation including the Forestry Act, 1950. This ensures a high level of protection and determines their management for conservation purposes.

Native Forest Reserves have long term management plans that are prepared in consultation with stakeholders and identify management activities that include pest and weed control, revegetation, fire management, threatened species recovery programs and public access management.

A number of these areas, including Mount Gawler NFR in the Mount Lofty Ranges and Honan NFR in the Green Triangle, are particularly significant protected areas with high conservation and biodiversity value.
