Planning should begin at least 12 months before planting and includes:

  • seeking any required development approvals (local council);
  • designing firebreaks and setbacks from water courses, powerlines, fences etc., – see Guidelines for Plantation Forestry in SA;
  • designing any required roading to ensure accessibility for establishment machinery, fire suppression activities and log trucks; 
  • selecting appropriate species and arranging for the growing of plants of suitable genetic quality.
