The role of PIRSA's Food Safety Program is to develop and apply legislation and initiatives that promote and improve food safety in  primary industry sectors, aimed at lowering the incidence of foodborne illness, while delivering consumer and industry confidence and market access opportunities in South Australia by:

  • developing strong working partnerships with industry stakeholders and other government departments particularly with Department of Health
  • developing and implementing strategies to manage risks by targeting high risk businesses
  • ensuring that primary production and processing businesses across meat, seafood and citrus sectors comply with the requirements of the Primary Produce (Food Safety Schemes) Act 2004, relevant regulations and standards.

The Dairy Authority of SA primary function is to ensure the safety and quality of the production and processing dairy products in SA by monitoring standards and providing efficient, professional and reliable guidance to the dairy industry. The Dairy Authority approves food safety arrangements and accredits dairy farmers, dairy manufacturers, dairy distributors and dairy produce carriers.
