Dr Hagen Stehr AO
Dr Hagen Stehr is a leading figure in Australia's seafood industry and a great champion of his adopted state.
He came to Australia from Germany in 1960 and founded Australian Tuna Fisheries (Stehr Group) in late 1969. The company has an international reputation for tuna fishing, offshore ranching and the grow-out of Southern Bluefin Tuna and the propagation and grow-out of Australian Yellowtail Kingfish and Mulloway.
This is done through Clean Seas, which Hagen founded in 2000 and of which he is still a major shareholder. The company operates a hatchery at Arno Bay and has extensive research and development capabilities. Under Hagen's direction it established the first kingfish export division in the country.
He was also the driving force behind the propagation of the closing of the life-cycle of Southern Bluefin Tuna. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Sunshine Coast in recognition of his significant contribution to sustainable fishing industries.
"South Australia already has a reputation as a 'clean and green' producer," he said.
"It needs a continual commitment and consistency in promoting these attributes both locally and overseas."
