Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) Fisheries has prepared a discussion paper on the future management of recreational fishing competitions in South Australia.
Managed fishing competitions could provide for the collection of research data during the competition, which would contribute to our knowledge of the status of our marine and inland water sources.
This knowledge will help ensure that recreational fishing continues to be managed on a sustainable basis while allowing the social and regional benefits of such activities.
Proposals for discussion include:
- the development of guidelines for managing and conducting large recreational fishing competitions
- establishing a registration and/or permit system to estimate the extent and impact of recreational fishing competitions with greater than 100 competitors
- requiring competition organisers to register and/or apply for a competition permit for a fee
- requiring all organisers of competitions to provide information on competition activities, including participation levels and catch and effort details
- encouraging organisers of competitions with more than 30 competitors but less than 100 competitors, including corporate fishing clubs, to provide summarised catch and participation levels.
The public were provided with the opportunity to make comments on the draft paper. The period for public comment has now ended.
