‘Get Hooked’ Educational Kit

Get hooked… it’s fun to fish introduces middle (years 3 and 4) and upper (years 5 and 6) primary school students to freshwater and marine fish, other aquatic life, and the importance of sustaining a quality fish habitat.

The kit contains a series of interactive discovery-based lesson plans and ‘hands on’ activities to help children understand the need for safe and responsible fishing practices. Each activity session is based on one of the six National Junior Fishing Codes that have been developed by Recfish Australia to help manage, protect and conserve the environment.

Code 1  Take only what you need
Code 2  Fish with friends
Code 3  You’re the solution to water pollution
Code 4  Throw the little ones back
Code 5  Don’t leave your tackle behind
Code 6  Quality catchments equals quality fish

Teachers can undertake the activities in the classroom. Fisheries Officers or Fishcare Volunteers might be available to assist.

Contents of the Kit

The kit contains all the information needed to successfully deliver the Get Hooked… it’s fun to fish education program, including:

  • Fishy activities for each code (including background notes, interactive watery tale, interactive drama or poem, two or three National Junior Fishing Code Activities, an evaluation activity, suggested follow-up class activities)
  • Helpful fishing gear (including keys to symbols used throughout the kit, examples of common aquatic fish and associated ‘Did you know?’ facts)
  • Corresponding links between all activities and the national Science and SOSE profiles
  • An appendix covering links to individual state profiles (using a Victorian example) glossary of terms, tips for setting the scene and successful group management, essential care considerations for fieldtrips, sample layout for the national Junior Recreational Fishing Passport, poster sources and further reading and references
  • National Junior Recreational Fishing Passport
  • Posters and stickers

Within each code there are specific learning outcomes that reinforce the particular National Junior Fishing code being explored in the classroom. All activities and extension activities are expected to meet these learning outcomes as they play a fundamental role in each student achieving the Junior Recreational Fishing Passport.
