All fisheries in Australia that have an export component must be assessed against sustainability guidelines before the fishery can receive export accreditation under the Commonwealth's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
This process involves the submission of a report (an ecological assessment) of each relevant fishery. PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture prepares these reports and provides them to the Commonwealth Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPaC), who assess them against sustainability guidelines. The Commonwealth Minister (or their delegate) then makes a decision as to whether a fishery receives a five year accreditation or a three year accreditation. These approvals are subject to conditions and recommendations, which typically require the development of further management arrangements over the accreditation period.
All South Australian fisheries that have been assessed have been successful in gaining export approval. This page includes the most recent ecological assessment reports for each fishery.
