Interim Snapper limit announced
A commercial daily trip limit for Snapper has been introduced as an interim measure to protect local stocks. The change is effective 1 January to 31 June 2012 and will contain commercial fishers to an 800 kg daily commercial trip limit within gulf waters. Seasonal Closures

Some species are protected for certain times of the year, usually during the breeding season.

Other species might be protected all year but only in certain areas, usually because the area is a spawning ground or a nursery area where juvenile fish can develop and grow.
 
If you incidentally catch a particular species of fish during the closed season for that species, you must return it to the water immediately. Make sure you know how to handle your catch and return fish safely to the water.  

Heavy fines can apply if you do not return protected fish to the water.

 False Bay, near Whyalla: all waters of Spencer Gulf enclosed by a line from the lighthouse at Point Lowly to the southern end of the Point Bonython jetty, then in a south-westerly direction to the eastern most point of the BHP jetty (latitude 33o02’12.63” s, longitude 137o36’1.98”e) near Whyalla, then to high water mark at the base of the jetty, then following the high water mark along the shoreline in an easterly direction back to the lighthouse at Point Lowly

CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY (It is an offence to remove Murray Cod from the water)

Seasonal closure applies between 1 August and 31 December, inclusive. A ban has been placed on trolling from a moving vessel for all freshwater fish species within these dates.

The taking of Murray Cod is prohibited from any section of the Chowilla floodplain north of the River Murray (excluding the River Murray) between 34°9'46.70" South, 140°45'30.38" East (Ral Ral Creek) upstream to the River Murray at 34°1'14.60" South, 141°0’9.69" East (South Australia and New South Wales border).

Pipis (Goolwa cockles)


Goolwa

During the open season, recreational fishing for Pipis (Goolwa cockles) is restricted to two areas, these are: 

  • the Sir Richard Peninsula (Goolwa Beach), north of the Murray mouth and;
  • the area between 28 Mile Crossing and the Kingston SE jetty on the Coorong Beach (for a map of this recreational zone

No recreational fishing for Pipis is permitted on the Younghusband Peninsula (Coorong Beach), between the Murray mouth and 28 Mile Crossing.

Razorfish Upper area within a line commencing on the shore of Spencer Gulf adjacent to beacon number 8, due east to that beacon then generally northerly to beacons 9, 13, 20, 19, 21, 23 and 28, then due west to Curlew Point During the months of January, February, October, November and December

Snapper (Pagrus auratus) All South Australian waters
 From 12 midday 1 November to 12 midday 30 November. 

Any snapper accidentally caught during the closed season must be returned to the water immediately.
