A Career in Fisheries Compliance

Fisheries Officers have the duty to:

  • protect and preserve fish stocks for present and future generations
  • preserve the rights of all who share the resource
  • educate and assist those who share the resource
  • uphold the law in relation to all fisheries legislation
  • detect and prevent fisheries offences.

A fisheries officer's duties vary on a day to day basis. They have a wide range of responsibilities and need to be multi-skilled. Fisheries officers must have a wide range of knowledge and abilities. These include:

  • an understanding of all aspects of fishing
  • being familiar with complex state and national laws associated with commercial and recreational fishing
  • the ability to talk to the community and explain and discuss various fisheries regulations.

If you are interested in becoming a fisheries officer you may wish to consider taking the nationally accredited Certificate III in the Seafood Industry (Fisheries Compliance), delivered through the Australian Fisheries Academy.

NOTE: As with any career, completing the Certificate III in the Seafood Industry (Fisheries Compliance) does not guarantee a position as a fisheries officer. Opportunities depend on positions becoming available.
