APVMA Review of Dimethoate and Fenthion

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority (APVMA) are reviewing current uses of the insecticides dimethoate and fenthion to confirm their safety in fresh produce for human consumption.

These insecticides are important in the treatment of a range of horticultural produce for fruit fly.  Pre- and post-harvest applications of dimethoate and fenthion currently underpin a number of domestic market access protocols for the entry of fruit fly host horticultural produce into South Australia from fruit fly endemic areas.

South Australian fruit and vegetable produce importers need to be aware that the supply of some traditionally available fruit fly host fruit and vegetables imported into South Australia from fruit fly endemic areas may be affected as a result of the APVMA review.

It is likely that some uses near or post harvest will not meet safety limits and be withdrawn. Most at risk of being withdrawn are post harvest uses on fruit and vegetables with edible peel.

The preliminary review findings by the APVMA are expected to be released in August- October.
