State & National Committees
Biosecurity SA is a member of key national and state groups that develop and implement plant health policy and standards.
At a state level:
- The Horticulture Plant Health Consultative Committee (HPHCC) considers the legislative framework for plant health in South Australia, national developments and plant health strategies for risk management.
- Biosecurity SA works with the South Australian Fruit Fly Standing Committee, established to provide input on the management of the SA Fruit Fly Program.
Technical support and standard setting are provided through:
- Plant Biosecurity (external site), within Biosecurity Australia, develops quarantine policies and standards, and assess the risks associated with the importation of exotic pests and diseases on plants and plant products.
- The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) (external site) provides quarantine inspection for people and products arriving into Australia, as well as inspection and certification for a range of agricultural products exported from Australia.
- The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for National Plant Biosecurity (external site) is the central coordinating body for plant biosecurity research across all Australian states and territories.
National policies are developed through the:
- National Plant Health Committee (external site) which develops national plant health policy, capacity and cabability in Australia and supports the Primary Industries Health Committee (PIMC) (external site).
- Primary Industries Standing Committee (PISC) (external site) which advises the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC) (external site), the peak government forum for consultation, coordination and integration of action by state and territory governments.
- Plant Health Australia (external site), a peak national body that coordinates the development of national policy and capability to respond effectively to plant pests, weeds and diseases, including the National Fruit Fly Strategy (external site)
- Domestic Quarantine and Market Access Working Group (DQMAWG) (external site), the key body coordinating interstate movement regulations for plant products in Australia.
- Tri-State
Policies for emergency management to respond to, control and eradicate any outbreaks of pests or disease are determined by contributing to the:
- Consultative Committee on Emergency Plant Pests (CCEPP) (external site), the key technical body for coordinating national responses to emergency plant pest incidents in Australia
- Plant Health Australia's National Management Group emergency response arrangements
- Scientific Advisory Group (SAG)
