Check the Alert Pest animal fact sheets on this website to assist with identification.
If an Alert Pest animal can be positively identified but not captured it should be humanely destroyed where possible, if safe to do so, and the carcass retained for further identification and testing. If unsure on how to respond seek advice from your regional NRM Board or the NRM Biosecurity Unit.
Where the animal cannot be identified or is identified but cannot be destroyed, confine the animal if it can be humanely captured and held in a safe manner without putting personal or public safety at risk. Do not capture any snake that cannot be identified, as it may be venomous, (Snakes - NRM). Be aware that even small wild mammals have the capacity to bite and inflict serious wounds. Ensure that the animal is held securely and humanely (i.e. provided with adequate food, water and shelter). If unsure on how to respond seek advice from your regional NRM Board or the NRM Biosecurity Unit.
If unable to capture or identify the animal, record accurately all details you can about the animal and the location and conditions when sighted. If possible photograph the animal.
Report the incident immediately to the NRM Biosecurity Unit on 08 83039620 or your regional NRM Board.
