Food Safety Information for the Seafood Industry

Bivalve Molluscs (Oysters, Mussels, Scallops, Cockles and Pipis)

The Primary Produce (Food Safety Schemes) (Seafood) Regulations 2006 (external link opens in new window) came into effect on 1 July 2006. The regulations established the Seafood Scheme.

The Scheme requires the holder of an aquaculture or fishery licence authorising the farming or taking of bivalve molluscs for human consumption to be accredited. Complete the Seafood Food Safety Scheme Application for Accreditation (PDF~0.036Mb) to become accredited.

Seafood other than bivalves 

Growers and harvesters are considered to be a primary food producer under the Food Act 2001 but this is dependant on the nature of activities undertaken. The Legislation & Standards section on this site gives more information to help determine if a business is a primary food producer or a food business.

A primary food producer is required to produce safe and suitable (as defined by the Food Act 2001) food and conform to the requirements of the Food Standards Code (external site), including the Seafood Standard – 4.2.1.
